Safety-Net Women’s and Reproductive Health Care

Grantee: Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawai’i, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky
Timeframe: July 2025 – June 2026 | Amount: $150,000

Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawai‘i, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky (PPGNHAIK) will use PHPDA Major Grant funding to provide comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care to patients regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.

This project aims to expand equitable access to care across King County, with a focus on serving teens and women ages 14 to 49 who are uninsured, enrolled in Medicaid, or living at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. PPGNHAIK serves a diverse patient population, including a high percentage of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals who often face significant barriers to care, such as cost, stigma, and discrimination, along with a lack of culturally competent providers.

Disparities in reproductive and sexual health outcomes, including unintended pregnancies, teen birth rates, maternal and infant mortality, and STI and HIV prevalence, highlight the urgent need for accessible, inclusive services. In King County, Indigenous, Black, and Pacific Islander communities experience disproportionately poor outcomes due to limited access to prenatal care and higher maternal and infant mortality rates. Rising STI rates, particularly a recent surge in syphilis, further underscore the need for prevention and treatment. The presence of Crisis Pregnancy Centers, which often mislead and misinform patients, adds to the barriers residents face when seeking care.

PPGNHAIK uses data-informed strategies to identify service gaps and guide interventions that address barriers related to cost, insurance, and stigma. Continued investment in PPGNHAIK’s services is essential to ensuring that all residents can access high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care regardless of income, identity, or insurance coverage.

Services are available at six King County health centers and through telehealth. These include a full range of contraceptive options, STI and HIV testing and treatment, abortion and miscarriage care, gender-affirming hormone therapy, cancer screenings, and wellness visits. Unlike many providers, PPGNHAIK does not limit the number of Medicaid or uninsured patients it serves. Nearly 70 percent of its Medicaid patients report they have no other healthcare provider.

With this grant, PPGNHAIK will expand rapid syphilis testing and treatment and increase telehealth access to better serve patients in underserved or out-of-state areas. As a training site for medical students and residents, PPGNHAIK is also helping build the reproductive healthcare workforce in the face of national provider shortages
