PHPDA attended Seattle University’s College of Nursing Dean’s Endowed Lectureship, and was impressed to find an active nursing student present their award-winning report on one of our past Major Grantee: Aurora Commons.
Daniela Acuna presented her award-winning report with information on one of Aurora Commons’ most recent and innovative program, “Spanish-Speaking Houseless and/or Survivors of Street-Based Commercial Sexual Exploitation Clients at Aurora Commons.”
When language barriers exist, medical terminologies creates a knowledge deficit, reducing resource access to essential health care. Unable to understand what organizations may offer or how to express their needs, clients are more likely not to opt in for services.
Translating documents was instrumental in increasing knowledge and access to care for their Spanish-speaking clients. The innovative program resulted in serving twenty (20) Hispanic/Latino clients every week. As of April 2023, Aurora Commons continued to see an increase in client admissions since the start of their program.
