Abortion Care Services

Grantee: Cedar River Clinics
Timeframe: July 2026 – June 2027 | Amount: $199,866.97

Cedar River Clinics (formally Feminist Women’s Health Center) operates a comprehensive abortion care services program at its Renton clinic. They are dedicated to providing equitable, high-quality, patient-centered first and second trimester abortion care to teens, women, and gender diverse individuals.

The program primarily serves low-income BIPOC women and gender diverse individuals of reproductive age (approximately 14–48 years) in King County. In 2025, 75% of Cedar River Clinics’ abortion patients were low-income—a 15% increase from the prior year—and 72% of King County patients served were BIPOC. The Renton clinic served 2,228 patients in 2025; combined with telemedicine, it reached 1,336 King County residents, representing 55% of its total patient base. Patients face significant barriers including financial limitations, underinsurance, social stigma, childcare and work-related delays, and limited access to reproductive health information.

Cedar River Clinics provides abortion services up to 27.6 weeks gestation, including in-clinic aspiration, medication abortion (in-clinic and via telemedicine), Dilation and Evacuation (D&E), and Induction Abortion—a newly adopted procedure offered since January 2026. Cedar River Clinics are the only safety-net abortion provider in Washington State that accepts Medicaid for D&E procedures past 25 weeks. Their specialized Abortion for Medical Reasons program supports patients navigating fetal anomalies or maternal health indications, offering dedicated care coordination, grief support, genetic testing, and bereavement resources. Additional services include STI screening, early cancer detection, pregnancy prevention, vasectomies, colposcopies, and gender-affirming care.

PHPDA funds will support Cedar River Clinics in managing operational costs, enabling them to continue subsidizing private insurance, supplementing Medicaid coverage gaps, and maintaining a sliding fee scale for low-income patients. This financial support sustains high-quality care access and directly addresses healthcare inequities for the organization’s target population, for many of whom Cedar River Clinics represents their sole healthcare provider.

Cedar River Clinics maintains collaborative training agreements with the University of Washington School of Medicine, Swedish Medical Center, and Seattle University School of Nursing. Research partnerships include the UW Birth Defects Lab and IBIS Reproductive Health. Hospital transfer agreements are in place with UW Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, Tacoma General, and Yakima Memorial. The organization also participates in reproductive health legislative coalitions, gender-affirming care coalitions, and the City of Renton’s Human Services group. Patient feedback is actively gathered through surveys and anecdotal evidence to continuously improve and expand services.
