Latine Cultural Produce Access in South King County
Grantee: Alimentando al Pueblo
Timeframe: October 2024 – September 2025 | Amount: $30,000
Alimentando al Pueblo will provide increased access to fresh cultural produce during the holiday season by partnering with local Latine businesses.
Through studies and Alimentando al Pueblo’s surveys, the Community has continuously expressed a need for increased access to fresh produce that is culturally familiar. While Alimentando al Pueblo works regularly with their long-time local partner, family-owned Mariposa Farm, Alimentando al Pueblo’s growing seasons do not allow for a variety of cultural foods when the seasons change.
During November and December, Alimentando al Pueblo will add a new level of engagement with Aztec Imports – an Auburn-based, Latine owned food business – to source nutrient dense vegetables, such as nopales, calabacitas, peppers, tomatoes, that are known to their Community. This partnership will help to increase the amount and diversity of vegetables at Alimentando al Pueblo’s food bank during colder months and offer participants an opportunity to gather and celebrate with families during the holiday season. Alimentando al Pueblo will also strive to put more fresh produce in homes during a time when children are not at school for winter break and many workplaces are closed.
Distribution of additional fresh foods sourced during November and December will occur in the same manner as Alimentando al Pueblo’s regular distributions. All distributions will occur at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church, with Alimentando al Pueblo’s paid, Spanish-speaking team carrying out all the marketing, organizing, and packing of food boxes into the cars of participating members at designated pick-up times.
Ongoing Community Partners will help spread the word and increase participation in Alimentando al Pueblo’s food program. Partners include Southwest Youth and Family Services, Para Los Niños, and Colectiva Legal del Pueblo.
ABOUT OUR GRANTEE
“Alimentando al Pueblo is a Community building organization that emerged during the global COVID 19 pandemic with the purpose of facilitating healing for a Community that was, and continues to be, disproportionately impacted by the pandemic – impacts that have only been amplified by systemic and historical racism and economic disenfranchisement. We face multifaceted problems, and we must have multifaceted solutions.
We know, and see that it, is our collective responsibility to ensure the well being of our Community.
We are guided by this understanding”
