The current De Corazon project and Promotoras will continue to directly address health disparities in heart health and CPR in the Latinx community in King County, by providing free CPR and heart health trainings for low-income Spanish speakers.  In 2020, the ten current CPR certified Promotora instructors, will be expanded to include a new cohort of Promotoras that will be trained, empowered and supported to co-design an expansion of the De Corazon program in 2020.

Specifically, funding will support staff and project costs for the development and expansion of their holistic approach to heart health, healthcare access and healthy living.  This new program expansion of De Corazon Spanish language CPR training and certification will grow to include three new separate components, the first of which (En Comunidad) will be supported by PHPDA in 2020:

  • En Comunidad (Talking from the Heart): Connect with fellow neighbors and community leaders to learn and speak about health topics that affect the Latinx community.  Learn how to access and navigate Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP and other health coverage services available to community members. Conduct hands on/roll playing workshops on how to advocate for and secure quality language and interpretive services, and how to be provided with culturally competent services available to community members.
  • Respira Corazon (Stress Management/Self Care): Learn effective culturally- based methods to cope with stressful situations and recognize the signs and symptoms of anxiety.
  • Nutriendo Al Corazon (Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and Nutrition Program): Classes for community members to learn about healthy eating and ways to monitor diabetes and lower blood pressure.

Activities:

  • Recruit up to ten additional Promotoras
  • Co-design with existing Promotoras, staff and experts training components and curriculum for the new En Comunidad De Corazon component in 2020.
  • Train new Promotoras on the De Corazon program approach and the new component, En Comunidad (Talking from the Heart)
  • Develop and implement the community engagement strategy with Promotoras
  • Develop and print a Latinx Culturally Competent Patient Resource Guide
  • Co-design and publish a graphic art Latinx handbook on accessing quality language and interpretive services and available cultural/traditional medical practices in King County

About Our Grantee

Villa Comunitaria

Villa Comunitaria (formerly the South Park Information & Resource Center) was incorporated in 2019 as an organization serving the most immediate needs of the Latinx community. Villa Comunitaria has grown into an organization offering programs that strengthen Latinx families regardless of immigration status, living in South Park and beyond wherever Latinx families reside in King County.

Villa Comunitaria programs are essential to helping immigrants in King County navigate the complexities of the United States health, housing, and education systems so they can thrive and prosper. The focus of work is in holistic approaches that supports the resilience and strengths of families.
